 Introduction:

The genre I'm going to be writing in is a high school drama. Ashanti is a high school girl, and she is an introverted, talented girl who struggles to fit in at school as she is overshadowed by the people around her however her passion for photography allows her to capture the beauty of the world and escape herself doubt. It is up to her whether she allows herself doubt and the others around her to continue to overshadow her or to breakout and show her talents.

Primary research:

Questions I should ask

  • Age

Americanized analysis

Narrative- we see the main character in her room getting ready for the day to go to school. The conflict is identified when her teammate who at first accepted her has now rejected her and embarrassed her is now trying to fight her and she gets hit and goes home and is comforted by her grandmother.

Character- the characters are created using stereotypes of race in the characters and the main character was created through them trying to fit in with another race and being confused about their identity and is trying to have a stereotypical black women accent and use stereotypical black language

Mise-en-scene- the location of the short film is mainly in the school to show that the characters are high schoolers, and they wear a basketball uniform to show that they are a part of the basketball team, as well as the majority of the short film being set in the gymnasium and the different costumes show the different cliques they are in and to further show that they are in the basketball team they have the props of the basketball and they use natural lowkey lighting so it can look realistic. This creates a meaning of confusion as the audience would not be sure how to feel as the protagonist is not sure about their identity

Cinematography- the style of the camerawork is smooth, and it does a lot of tracking and panning to keep up with the characters and show what's going on in the surrounding area and it also blurs out the background when it wants the audience to pay attention to a specific thing in the forefront.

Editing- the pace of the short film is slow but gets to the point of the short film and keeps the audience intrigued and keeps their attention and they use effects which makes the lighting more harsh and bright for certain scenes as well as doing slow MO's and fast paste transitions to grab the audience's attention.

Sound- the non-diegetic sound is transitioned from diegetic into non-diegetic so it can be used in a slomo clip so the audience can see how out of place the main character is and how uncomfortable the character looks, and the non-diegetic sound is used to put emphasis on the characters emotions and important scenes that move along the plot. Diegetic sound in the short film is mostly dialogue and background sound as well as the sounds that would be associated with the scene

Conclusion- one thing that is effective from the short film is cinematography as the tracking and panning immerses the audience into the short film as it feels like we are following the character in their day-to-day life, and it helps the audience see the emotional turmoil and identity crisis the character is going through which was caused by their passion for basketball which is thought to be a black dominated sport.

Secondary research:

The high school experience is described as a fresh start a time where people start to discover themselves. When people start high school, they’re usually so excited. They can’t wait to experience everything that comes with being in high school people say that high school is the best four years of their lives some even say it’s their most educational years of their lives as it taught them a lot about who they are and how others are going to act and treat them once they leave school some sat that these four years taught them invaluable lessons that they otherwise wouldn’t learn and they have great memories good or bad that they will always remember and during high school they begin to gain independence and go out and do their own things.

A typical day of a high school student is:

  • 7:30 AM, Homeroom -12:00 PM, Lunch

  • 8:00 AM, English - 12:30 PM, PE

  • 9:00 AM, History -1:30 PM, study hall

  • 10:00 AM, Art - 2:00 PM, Science

  • 11:00 AM, Maths - 3:00 to 6:00 PM, Extracurricular activities

Sports and extracurricular activities are prioritized in American high schools. sports are very important in American high schools and offer the opportunity of scholarships to many student-athletes so they can go on to higher education and perhaps push their careers further. Not only school sports, but American high school students are encouraged to participate and join as many clubs and extra-curriculars as possible.so they can make connections and friends through these extracurricular activities and these connections could help them get into higher education or an apprenticeship.
